Record, review, and stay in control.
Start in Chrome
- Open the True Author extension popup and read the capture disclosure.
- Choose Enable recording. No True Author account is required.
- Open or focus a Google Docs document or supported writing field. Existing text is marked as preexisting.
- Choose Open document library in the popup to review local documents and source highlights.
Optional desktop connection
Install and run the True Author desktop app. Enable recording in the Chrome extension; it automatically finds the Windows app on this PC. Choose Yes in the Windows connection prompt once. The extension shows Connected and reconnects automatically. If the app was opened later, click Connect to desktop in the extension. No pairing code is needed. Account linking is a separate, optional step for desktop metadata sync.
Desktop-only recording, extension-only recording and combined recording have different coverage. Browser-only capture cannot observe copies in other desktop apps. Desktop-only Google Docs access depends on Windows accessibility.
Desktop setup →If a document is missing
Check that recording is enabled and the site is not excluded. Focus the document, wait a few seconds, and reopen the library. Reload existing tabs after updating the extension. Some canvas editors, menus, composition input and programmatic edits expose incomplete events; unknown changes remain unobserved. Google Docs text export can also fail because of access permissions, network conditions or website changes.
Pause, stop, or delete
Pause recording in the popup to stop capture everywhere. Exclude this site stops that origin. Stop tracking pauses that saved browser document. Forget everything asks for confirmation before deleting browser audits and recent copy history; desktop and cloud copies remain. Keep backups you need before deleting.
Report a problem
Include your Chrome and extension versions, whether you use the desktop, and steps to reproduce. Use a fictional sample rather than private manuscript text.
Use the support channel listed on the extension’s Chrome Web Store page.
